- Gold Star Peak Dedication to Honor Fallen Soldiers: Lakeview Commons/El Dorado Beach 11:00 AM. The public is invited to a ceremony Sept. 6 to dedicate Gold Star Peak in honor of three Lake Tahoe-area soldiers who died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ceremony will include the unveiling of a bronze memorial plaque. The previously unnamed peak, visible across the lake on the north shore between Mount Watson and Martis Peak, has been named for the Gold Star lapel pin established in 1947 to identify the families of service members killed in combat. Speakers at the ceremony will include Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson and South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis. Hwy 50 and Lakeview Ave.

- Free Fishing Day in California: The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is waving the fishing license requirement on Sept. 7. This is one of two free fishing days the department sponsors each year. Size and number limits remain, thought.
