COUNTY GOVERNMENT 101

The Lake Tahoe Basin is under the jurisdiction of four different counties within two different states!

So, in order to make things as crystal clear as the lake, we have noted the county and state boundaries on the Lake Tahoe map below. In addition, we have noted the locations of Lake Tahoe's four Chambers of Commerce and the four County Recorder Clerk's Offices.

We have color coded the areas of the map so that you can easily determine which Chambers of Commerce to contact for general and wedding information and which County Recorder Clerk's Office to visit to obtain your marriage license.

Yes, there is an exception to the boundaries. The city of Tahoma on the west side of Lake Tahoe sits on the county line with portions of the town in
El Dorado and Placer counties. Call either county with the exact address to determine jurisdiction.

Please continue reading for detailed information about the Lake Tahoe Chambers of Commerce and marriage license requirements. Match colors!

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

Four Chambers of Commerce serve the businesses of Lake Tahoe. Each Chamber is an expert on who does what in their quadrant of the basin.

Each of Lake Tahoe's four Chambers of Commerce offers a special "Wedding Planner" by request. These planners provide well-organized and area-specific information that will help you choose the best location for your wedding. You'll be able to preview and "shop" service providers from a distance and narrow your choices for telephone and in-person interviews. You'll get lots of great ideas, too!

And if you visit Lake Tahoe to arrange your wedding in advance, you will find the Visitor Center at each Chamber of Commerce to be a friendly and helpful resource.

To receive information about planning a wedding at Lake Tahoe, contact the Chambers of Commerce directly by phoning, writing or visiting. Or complete the "Request for Wedding Information" form below to make your requests by e-mail.

You can easily determine the correct Chambers of Commerce to contact by going to the Lake Tahoe map towards the top of this page and noting the color of the map in areas that of are interest to you. There is one exception. The city of Tahoma on the west side of Lake Tahoe sits on the county line with portions of the town in El Dorado and Placer counties. MAKING YOUR MARRIAGE LEGAL

If your are interested in getting married at Lake Tahoe, you will need a Marriage License or a Certificate of Confidential Marriage.

California and Nevada issue a standard public Marriage License that may be used anywhere in the state in which it was issued. Additionally, California offers the option of a Certificate of Confidential Marriage that must be issued and used in the county in which it was issued.

Once you choose a location for your marriage ceremony, you will need to determine the correct County Recorder Clerk's Office to contact and visit to obtain a license.

This can be easily accomplished by going to the Lake Tahoe map towards the top of this page and noting the color of the map at the location you have chosen for your marriage ceremony.

Match the color of the map at your chosen location to one of the four County Recorder Clerk's Offices listed below. That office will have jurisdiction over your marriage ceremony.
